Take a book with you ! September 18, 2009

I spent nearly 40 minutes waiting in a queue at the Post Office yesterday. Fortunately, it wasn’t a waste of time, because I had a book with me. It was a good book and the forty minutes seemed to pass quickly for me. The same can’t be said for most of the people queuing with me who spent their time grumbling and moaning.

I love this quote from Charles W. Elliot :

“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers. “

Many of us would like to read more, but often it’s a struggle to find the time. In our fast-paced, busy lives the wonderful art of reading gets consigned to the back-burner. But it would be a great shame to give it up totally and banish books from our attention.

I read somewhere that the average person spends two years of their lives queuing in line. I don’t know how they worked that out, but whichever way you cut it, we all pass a lot of our time in queues.

And so make the most of it. Whenever there’s the slightest chance you’ll be kept waiting, take a book with you. While others are moaning, you’ll be using your time constructively to feed your intellect and inspire your spirit.
