I’m regularly asked about what’s the optimum time of the day for meditation. I understand, in people’s busy lives, they want to get the most out of any possible quiet time, so finding the best time to meditate is important to them.
Traditionally, it’s the early morning time that offers the best time for quiet and stillness. Not only is your home likely to be at its quietest, but you are calm from sleeping and the busy day has yet to fill your mind with distractions and demands on your time and thoughts.
Human beings have evolved to be at their most active during daylight hours, so beginning your meditation in the early hours of the morning will provide you with a point of departure to face your busy day. This is the ideal time for most people to meditate, BUT, it’s worth remembering how different we all are, and some people may find a different time of the day the most beneficial.
Many people like to meditate in the evening to help relax and refresh them after work. If you have the time, of course, you can meditate in both the morning and evening to increase the beneficial effects. Some people even fit in another session at mid-day as a way of energising themselves for the afternoon.
If you suffer from sleeping difficulties, then it can be very beneficial to meditate directly before you go to bed. Meditation will help you to relax physically and mentally and get your brain in the right state to trigger good quality sleep. That way you slowly merge the peaceful stillness and quiet of meditation with sleep.
Finding the right time to meditate is a matter of personal preference. You should try out different times that suit your daily routine. The best way to make anything a part of your day is to habituate the practice into your routine.
Find a comfortable place, somewhere quiet and cosy, whenever, wherever. You can enjoy the benefits of meditation at any time, and you should choose the time that suits you best rather than being dictated to by others.

Today I’d like to talk about how meditation can benefit those of us who suffer from insomnia. Statistics from BUPA show that 5 out of 10 people suffer from sleeping difficulties and over time, sleep problems can be extremely debilitating and cause physical and psychological problems, such as headaches, lack of concentration, irritability, feelings of anxiety, muscle pain, and so on.
Researchers at the Laval University in Quebec have recently evaluated insomnia persistence; arriving at the conclusion that the condition may not easily disappear with medical treatment. The Canadian researchers say that insomnia is in fact a chronic illness, meaning that it can run a minimal natural course of one year and may last for many years.
But conventional medical help is not the only way to tackle insomnia. It can also be approached through a healthy dose of calm and stillness – meditation. Whether you use a meditation machine, or prefer to meditate using more traditional practices such as yoga – you’re on the way to ensuring that through meditation, your body will wind down and arrive at a juncture of calm and stillness that will help you sleep.
Also, try to build 30 minutes (or even just 15 minutes) into your daily routine, where you give yourself some ‘you-time’. Use that half-hour to slip out of your hectic and busy schedule, turn off your phone, television and computer and cleanse your mind from any pressing thoughts or issues. Over time, regularly spending a little while each day in deep relaxation or meditation will have a very positive impact on your sleep patterns.
If you’re interested in using a meditation machine to help with your sleeping difficulties, then I would recommend that you particularly look at our MindSpa system.

Meditation Can Make You Young March 13, 2009

Today’s blog is about some really fascinating research from the United States. Three of America’s top universities have been researching the effects of meditation on the brain, and the results are both interesting and exciting. MIT, Yale and Harvard found that experienced meditators had larger brains than non-meditators. This is the first research that indicates that meditation actually changes the physical structure of the brain. So when we say that meditation broadens your mind, it really does, literally!
As we age, certain areas of the brain become thinner, these are mainly in parts of the cortex. These areas deal primarily with attention span and the senses. As we get older, the thinning produces unwanted effects in all of us such as dulled senses and decreased attention span. However, if this research is correct, people that meditate can not only reverse this process, but they can strengthen and increase the size of their brains.
This is exciting research indeed as it is shows scientifically that meditation can improve your overall well being by directly stimulating your brain. Similar research into the effects of music and juggling have shown that these activities also helped stimulate growth in the thickness of the brain in related areas.
Further studies are currently underway to provide greater evidence of the changes induced by meditation. This research should reveal more about how the thickening of the brain helps us as we get older.
So, meditation won’t only provide you with physical stillness and a mental quietness, it may also help you maintain your mental sharpness for much longer If that sounds like something you want to experience, then take the fast track to meditation with our meditation machines.

Last week, the surviving Beatles came out in public to announce that they were holding a fundraising concert to provide children all over the world with an opportunity to enjoy meditation.
Such high profile public figures as Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are promoting transcendental meditation to offer young children “a quiet haven in a not-so-quiet world” as Sir Paul McCartney said. The pair will join a star-studded line up of special guests in a concert that will provide the funding for the David Lynch Foundation, which has already taught sixty thousand children worldwide to enjoy the benefits of meditation.
The Beatles famously discovered transcendental meditation in 1968 when they visited the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Sir Paul recently said “”In moments of madness, it has helped me find moments of serenity”. Serenity – peaceful inner stillness is one of the essential benefits of meditation. The concert entitled ‘Change Begins Within‘ will be held April in New York at Radio City Music Hall. Stars such as Eddie Vedder, Sheryl Crow and Ben Harper are lining up to support Macca and David Lynch’s charity, and yes, it’s the film director David Lynch (Twin Peaks and The Lost Highway) who also has a personal view that meditation can help children across the world to have a better quality of life.
It’s wonderful that such a positive image of meditation has made it into the world news, perhaps only because of the musical line up, but it’s still a very encouraging thing to see. Meditation has so many benefits to offer not only children, but people of all ages, and if Sir Paul and his friends want to highlight its many benefits, that’s great.
In my next blog, I’m going to discuss some important research carried out by several major universities in the United States which indicates that meditation can be good for slowing the brain’s aging process.
