We tend to think that our hearts beat with absolute regularity, like a metronome. In fact, a healthy heart is constantly varying the time between beats. These variations are instigated by the nervous system as it continually seeks the most efficient and optimum way for the body to operate.

The variation in the time between heart beats is referred to as Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Because HRV provides a window on your nervous system, it gives us a wonderful way of monitoring how well your body is preserving its equilibrium.

Recently, analysis of HRV has attracted a great deal of interest within the medical community as being an excellent non-invasive measurement of nervous system activity and heart health.

To understand this, it’s important to recognize that our health depends on how well our body can constantly adjust all of its functions to the myriad stimuli and demands that are continually changing. Temperature, light, noise, time of day, blood sugar, an endless list of stress and change of all kinds require our body to regulate itself around a point of balance. The better it can do this the healthier we are. The more our body’s ability to adapt to this constant change declines, the sicker we become. In the case of the heart, it must constantly regulate its output of blood to demands for blood flow that change every instant. Studies have demonstrated that decrease in heart rate variability emerges as the single most common risk factor for all kinds of chronic diseases such as diabetes, chronic fatigue, heart failure, neurological disorders, and many others.

It used to be that instruments that could measure HRV were very expensive and only available in hospitals. Fortunately, technological advances mean that low-cost and accurate system for measuring HRV are now available to us for use at home. Indeed, some devices are so portable, that we can carry them around with us and use them whenever we want to.

Not only that, but some of these system use a technique known as biofeedback to teach you that you can actually improve your HRV and therefore enhance your physical and psychological health and well-being.

The best of the portable biofeedback devices is the StressEraser. The StressEraser, is a small, light device that measures your pulse rate from your fingertip using an infrared sensor. It converts this information into a HRV wave which it displays on a small LCD screen. Best of all, the StressEraser then starts to guide you to breathe slowly and rhythmically which will have an almost immediate, positive effect on your HRV. You’ll see this improvement reflected on the screen as your HRV wave becomes smoother and more regular.

The StressEraser is so effective that it’s even be registered with the FDA (the American health regulatory body) with an indication for ‘Relaxation, Relaxation Training and Stress Reduction’.

The StressEraser is a great complement to the MindSpa. Thanks to biofeedback devices like the StressEraser, we can all benefit from increased HRV and help ourselves to better health and well-being.

Being a student can be a great experience. You’re studying a subject that you’re interested in and enjoying the opportunity to get involved in new activities and make new friends. For some of you, it might be the first time you’ve lived away from home and you’re relishing your new-found independence.

But student life isn’t fun all the time. It can also be stressful and difficult. Students face challenges such as intensive study schedules, social pressure from peers and the risks of drug and alcohol abuse. The life of a student isn’t just an exciting time of opening to a universe of knowledge, it’s a first-hand introduction to some of life’s most intense pressures.

This is why you need the deep rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation of meditation. You learn better when you are happy and relaxed. And there’s an even better reason to consider meditation : What better time to expand, deepen, and clear your mind when learning is your first priority? This is just when it really makes sense to begin to unfold your full creative potential. Studies have correlated the practice of meditation with higher creativity, increased intelligence, and improved memory. That’s because meditation not only clears the mind, but opens a person to the deeper, silent, creative levels of thought.

Scientific research verifies that meditating develops increasing use of the total brain. Students practicing meditation enjoy:

- Development of hidden brain reserves, greater creativity, higher IQ

- More efficiency in learning new concepts, improved academic achievement, better grades

- Improved standardized test scores on general academic achievement

- In addition, specific meditation techniques can help with Speed Learning.

Students that practice meditation enjoy increasingly happy, healthy, problem-free lives. Spontaneously they are able to fulfill their own interests while upholding the interests of others. Research confirms that students who meditate experience :

- Less stress

- Increased creativity

- Less anxiety and depression

- Improved memory

- Greater emotional stability

- Increased learning ability

- Better concentration and focus

- A sense of fulfilment and purpose

- Improved self-confidence

- Greater awareness and intuition

There are many ways you can learn to meditate. Using traditional techniques, learning to meditate would take many months, or even years, of practice – with no guarantee of success.

With a Meditation Machine (also known as Mind Machines), such as our MindSpa system, you can take the Fast Track to Meditation. Meditation Machines combine modern technology with ancient wisdom to enable you to meditate easily and automatically and start to receive the benefits immediately.

Using Your MindSpa For Chakra Energising June 24, 2010

Many people are becoming aware of the Eastern concept of chakras. Cleaning and energising your chakras is a powerful way of attaining inner peace, improving your health, heightening your spirituality and expanding your consciousness. Your MindSpa can help you with this.

Chakras are energy centres – vibrating forms of cosmic light. We have seven major chakras that radiate out from different points along the spine, forming a vertical axis from the base of the spine to the top of the head. They provide a pathway that can carry us from the individual and personal realms of consciousness to the spiritual universal domains.

Each chakra vibrates at different frequency and is associated with a different colour. The first three chakras are our personal chakras The red root chakra is located at the base of your spine. The sacral chakra is found halfway between your navel and the base of your spine and appears as orange. The solar plexus chakra is bright yellow and is right behind your navel.

The fourth major chakra is the heart chakra located in the centre of the chest. It’s green in colour and represents the beginning of the upper chakras which correspond to universal and spiritual issues.

As it’s name suggests, the blue throat chakra is located in the throat area. The sixth chakra is known as the Third Eye and is in the brow between the two eyes. It radiates with a mixture of indigo and purple light. Finally, at the top of your head is the Crown chakra which is associated with either violet or pure white.

The chakras can profoundly affect your body, mind and spirit. It is through the chakras that these aspects of your being are connected and can be aligned and balanced. If the chakras become blocked, then you may experience sickness and other mental and physical difficulties.

There are many ways that you can ensure that your chakras remain clear and free-flowing with energy. Exercise and a good diet are important for the lower, personal chakras. And living a moral, well-intentioned life will benefit the higher, spiritual chakras. It’s also important to concentrate on positive rather than negative thoughts.

Meditation using your MindSpa is a great way to cleanse, energise and balance your chakras. There are many visualisation and breathing exercises you can do during a session with your MindSpa to revitalise and unblock your chakras. It’s worth finding out more about chakras so that you can benefit from the many physical, mental, emotional and spiritual advantages that they can bring you.

Using meditation to help with pain relief June 11, 2010

I’ve had many emails from people who have successfully used meditation to help with pain relief. I thought that this topic might be of interest to people who hadn’t thought of using meditation in this way.

Although meditation for pain relief has been being used for hundreds of years, it is only recently that it has become highly recognized as a great optional way to relieve various kinds of pain. Recent studies have proven that meditation for pain relief is a very powerful way to help relieve pain without the many side effects that are found in other methods such as drugs. Meditation for pain relief teaches the body to relax and to focus on things other than the present pain.

A study at the University of Manchester found that meditators have lower pain sensitivity – both in and out of meditative states – compared to non-meditators.

Dr Christopher Brown who carried out the research said the findings should encourage further research “Although meditators anticipate pain less and find pain less unpleasant, it’s not clear how meditation changes brain functions to produce these effects”.

Avoiding Potentially Harmful Drugs

One of the benefits of using meditation for pain relief is that it can help keep people from having to take pain relieving drugs that may have harmful side-effects. Some pain relief drugs can lead to addiction and can cause long term health problems. Meditation can provide pain relief that will help patients cut back on pain relievers and, in some cases, quit taking them altogether.

Relieves the Body’s Responses to Pain

Meditation for pain relief also has the benefit of relieving the various responses that the body has to pain. When pain occurs in the body, the body usually responds with adrenaline and the “fight or flight” reflex. When you learn to use meditation to relax, the body can help manage these responses and, in turn, help to alleviate the pain.

Turning the Mind from Pain

Meditation works to focus the mind on places and feelings other than what you are feeling at the current moment and this also works to help lessen pain . The feelings of pain are more than physical, they are both emotional and mental. Meditation for pain relief works by taking the mind and focusing it on something other than the of pain within the body. This helps to diminish the perception of pain that is being felt.

Reduction of Anxiety

Many people who suffer from pain have to deal with anxiety and elevated blood pressure as a result of the pain they are suffering. Often, the anxiety can actually increase the pain that they are feeling. Meditation helps to reduce the levels of anxiety and can help to bring down blood pressure as well.

Trying meditation for pain relief is worth a try. Not only can it help you deal with your pain, but it can also increase your health, mental and emotional well-being in many other beneficial ways too.

MindSpa and NLP March 23, 2010

One of the reasons for the success of the MindSpa Personal Development System is that it is incredibly popular with the NLP community.

This is partly due to it carrying a very strong endorsement from the co-creator of NLP, Dr Richard Bandler.

Dr Bandler says this about the MindSpa :

“I have devoted 35 years to developing tools to make the human brain more user friendly. I find the MindSpa to be of the most important new tools that can open the doorway to better quality of life.

I use the MindSpa on myself….I use the MindSpa on my clients. The results I get are astonishing. Better learning, sleeping, thinking…… the list goes on and on. I intend to use this device to create opportunity, success, and freedom.

Let the future be more wonderful! “

NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) has been variously described as the technology of the mind, the science of achievement, and the study of success. It was developed in the mid-70s by Bandler and John Grinder, a Professor at UC Santa Cruz . NLP is based upon the search for and the study of the factors which account for either success or failure in human performance.

NLP describes, in very precise terms, the images, sounds, and feelings that make up our inner and outer world. How do we know what we know? How do we do what we do? For example, how do you know that a pleasant memory is pleasant? How do you know when to feel scared or happy? How do you know that you like or dislike something? How do you learn a subject easily, or not?

NLP provides us with the equivalent of a user’s manual for our brain – NLP techniques demonstrate how we ‘code’ our experience. When we understand the specific ways that our brains make distinctions, then it is easier to make changes, to learn and to communicate effectively.

With its powerful brain-enhancing programmes, it’s not surprising that many students and masters of NLP use their MindSpas to accelerate the mastery of their minds.

Using Your MindSpa with Eyes-Open March 9, 2010

One of the great features of the MindSpa is that as well as using it with your eyes closed for relaxation and meditation, you can also use it with “eyes open” for enhanced concentration.

Being able to use your MindSpa when you’re reading or working at your computer can help to clear your mind of external distractions and enable you to focus on the task at hand.

When MindSpa first introduced their “eyes open” light-glasses, I must admit that I was a little sceptical about the idea. I have fairly sensitive eyes and I didn’t think that I’d like the sensation of having my eyes open while the lights were flickering.

But MindSpa have been very clever in the way they’ve designed the glasses. First, the LEDs are positioned around your eyes so that they are not in your direct line of sight, and secondly, of course, you can control the intensity of the light. I always have the lights set very dim and the result is that I’m hardly aware of the flickering sensation.

To my surprise, I’ve found the “eyes-open” use of the MindSpa to be extremely effective – in fact, I’m using it now to write this article.

I use my MindSpa in this way pretty much every day, particularly in the afternoons when my concentration is beginning to fade. I especially find it useful to use my MindSpa with my eyes open when I need to do something that I’m not that interested in or enthusiastic about – it really does help me to focus and get the job done.

I’ve also got my fifteen years old daughter using it. She was finding it difficult to revise for some important exams recently – she said that she couldn’t keep her attention on the work and kept day-dreaming. So she stared studying with her MindSpa and found that she was able concentrate much more easily on her books.

Studying when your mind is in a more relaxed state has also been shown to improve memory and recall. Maybe it was just coincidence, but my daughter did brilliantly in her exams !

Seashore Meditation March 4, 2010

This is an interesting meditation exercise that you can perform while using your MindSpa. It can bring peace, harmony and even clairvoyant visions.

Select one of your favourite relaxation sessions on your MindSpa.

Take some deep breaths and relax. Imagine that you are standing on a beach, with golden, perfectly smooth sand beneath your feet. Your hair is being gently ruffled by a light, refreshing breeze. Look up at the beautiful blue sky, flecked with the odd puff of cloud, and feel the warmth of the sun on your face. Now gaze out at sea – a calm, blue sea that reflects the bright sunlight.

Now relax your concentration slightly and just let whatever is going to happen, happen. The sea may become a little rougher, the wind a little stronger, the sand a little less smooth, or the whole scene may change completely – just allow it to happen. These changes symbolise your near future. Don’t dwell on any one thing for too long, just observe. And don’t worry if you don’t understand what the changes mean, often you will have an insight after the exercise, perhaps later in the day – or maybe in the next few days.

After letting the scene play out for a while, use the power of your imagination to turn the scene back to how it was at the beginning.; the bright sun, the calm sea, the perfect sand, and so on.

This exercise is deceptively simple, but it has deep mystical significance and, if done correctly, will bring a sense of calm and balance. Practiced over time, it will enhance your intuitive awareness and enable you to see the future.

Meditation and Pain Relief November 13, 2009

We’ve had quite a few people contact us lately asking if our Meditation Machines can help with pain relief.

In the East, meditation has been used for pain relief since ancient times, but it’s only comparatively recently that it’s become recognized in the West as a natural and effective way for managing and reducing physical discomfort.

In fact, a study carried out at the Universitie de Montreal by Professor Pierre Rainville and Joshua Grant found that meditators had much lower pain sensitivity compared to people who didn’t meditate.

“While previous studies have found that the emotional aspects of pain are influenced by meditation,” explains Grant, “we found that the sensation itself, as well as the emotional response, is different in meditators.”

Past research had shown that teaching chronic pain patients to meditate is beneficial, but very few studies have looked at pain processing in healthy, highly trained meditators.

“If meditation can change the way someone feels pain, thereby reducing the amount of pain medication required for an ailment, that would be clearly beneficial,” says Grant.

Of course, using meditation rather than drugs to relieve pain has many advantages as many pain relieving drugs have harmful side effects. And meditation can also reduce the stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia that often accompanies painful conditions.

We have an interesting Case Study about someone who used one of our Meditation Machines to help with the pain and discomfort associated with multiple sclerosis. You can read it at http://www.meditationsuk.com/resources/helen_hills.htm

Using a Meditation Machine like the MindSpa can not only help you to manage your pain, but will also lead to a better overall sense of physical and mental well-being.

National Stress Awareness Day November 5, 2009

Yesterday was National Stress Awareness Day. The fact that such a day exists, and that it’s in its 11th year, says a lot about society – and the workplace – today. In fact, stress has become so prevalent that NICE – the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence – has launched new guidance for employers about how to improve mental well-being in the workplace.

The organizers of National Stress Awareness Day is the International Stress Management Association (ISMA).

Ann McCracken, chair of ISMA, says: “Stress, anxiety and depression accounts for over 13.5 million workdays each year, making it the single biggest cause of sickness in the UK. The aim of the campaign is to increase public awareness about the effects of stress, the treatments available and, most importantly, to help individuals suffering from stress to seek help.”

One of the best, natural antidotes to stress is meditation. And meditation is also one of the most effective forms of anxiety treatment. It can be the key to alleviating this problem as it will cultivate an overall calmness that eases anxious feelings and offers a sense of control, using the natural power of your mind.

Meditating whenever you feel levels of anxiety will help naturally to quieten your mind and relax your body. WIth regular meditation, your general state of mind will improve and you’ll find that you’ll feel less anxious about issues that previously caused you stress. The calmness and tranquillity that meditation brings will give you greater emotional stability and the ability to handle stressful situations in a controlled way.
And so If meditation is so good for you, why doesn’t everyone do it ?

The problem is that, using traditional techniques, learning meditation is very difficult.

In fact, using traditional methods, it can take many months – and probably years – of disciplined practice before you gain control of your mind and attain meditative states.

Fortunately, however, there are modern techniques, like the MindSpa, that enable you to take a fast-track to meditation. Isn’t it time that you benefited from the better sense of physical and mental well-being that deep relaxation and meditation can bring you ?

We’re delighted that our MindSpa system has been selected by The Gadget Show to be in their Top 50 Christmas Gifts.

You might remember that the MindSpa was featured in The Gadget Show’s focus group session and was unanimously voted ‘The Best Stress Buster’. You can see a video clip of the focus group session at http://fwd.five.tv/gadget-show/videos/focus-group/focus-group-stress-busters

The MindSpa has always been popular at Christmas time and many of our customers buy them as presents for friends and family. Last Christmas, one of our customers ( whose MindSpa had helped him with anxiety and sleep problems) bought eight MindSpas for his friends !

We’re starting the run-up to Christmas and according to a survey by the mental health charity Mind, one in five of us gets stressed during the festive season. Christmas is a time for parties, but not everyone enjoys parties, especially if they’re a bit shy. . Here are some quick tips to bear in mind if you’re feeling nervous about going to a party.

Don’t worry about coming up with sparkling conversation. Just being a good listener makes you popular.
To get the conversation going, ask open questions such as what someone is doing for Christmas or how their job’s going. Remember FORE – Family, Occupation, Relaxation and leisure, and Education – for conversation topics.
We all get on with certain people at work or socially more than others. At a party, talk to them first to build your confidence.
Breathing exercises will help you relax. Breathe in to the count of four, out to the count of five, relaxing your shoulders and tummy. Repeat four times.
Don’t rely on alcohol to calm your nerves – it can make you more stressed.
